New Website Launched For Gifts And Experiences
This week has seen the launch of a new website of mine, Gifts To Thrill. The site offers experiences such as driving supercars and helicopter lessons, as well as traditional and personalised gifts.
Behind the scenes the website acts as affiliate site, meaning that when someone clicks through to purchase an item, a percentage (between 3% and 12%) of the sale price is given as commission.
The extra revenue isn’t the only reason I built this site though. There are two other areas that interested me and led me to build this site:
Third Party Data Feed – Call me weird but there’s something that excites me when it comes to working with and manipulating strings of data. In this case the data was provided by the third party in a CSV (Comma-separated values) file. I then created a simple PHP script that looped through this CSV file and extracted the data and images needed and put them into my own database schema, ready for displaying on the website.
Pay Per Click Marketing – I’ve never had much exposure to ‘pay per click’ advertising so I saw this as a great excuse to get stuck in and get a campaign set up. I chose Google Adwords as my weapon of choice and set up a few ads with a cost-per-click starting from as low as 20 pence. This has already started to generate more traffic to the site than expected so I’m going to continue to experiment with this for a few more weeks to see where it leads.
