Fixing WordPress Site Stuck in Maintenance Mode After Updates

November 14th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Marks to Web Development.

Whilst doing an upgrade to WordPress plugins earlier, the ‘Maintenance Mode’ that gets enabled during the process didn’t get removed, and the site in question was left with a permanent message:

Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute

The Solution

The solution was to connect to the site via FTP. Once there, I found a file called ‘.maintenance‘ in the root of the site. Simply deleting this file then bought the site back instantly.

The plugins had indeed updated successfully so I’m not sure where the update process went wrong. Fortunately though this was a simple fix that got the site back online right away without having to revert to backups.
