Find Large Emails in Thunderbird Clogging up your Mailbox

June 16th, 2014 - Posted by Steve Marks to Miscellaneous, Software.

Today saw my mailbox bursting at the seams with the size reaching a whopping 95%. In the back of my mind I knew that I had previously received some huge emails from clients with massive attachments. I just had to find these large emails and delete them.

We use Mozilla’s Thunderbird as our email client. Fortunately it comes with such a feature to find these larger emails through use of a simple search facility. To find these emails with huge attachments simply follow the steps below:

1. Navigate to ‘Edit > Find > Search Messages…‘.

2. Choose the mailbox from the dropdown that you wish to search.

3. Select ‘Size (kB)‘ as the thing to filter on.

4. Change the middle dropdown to ‘is greater than‘.

5. Enter a value in KB.

6. Click ‘Search

Thunderbird Search Emails
In my scenario I chose to view emails larger than 5000 KB (approximately 5MB). Once I had my results back I found that I had some ridiculously large emails, some up to 50MB.

After deleting the largest emails, and taking a backup where necessary, I emptied the ‘Deleted‘ folder and the mailbox size was reduced massively.
