FileZilla Error When Loading – “The XML document is not well-formed”

January 18th, 2013 - Posted by Steve Marks to Software, Web Development.

Recently I started getting the following error when loading up the FileZilla FTP client:

FileZilla - The XML document is not well-formed

The software would still load but, as the error message states, loaded with the default settings.

The problem is mentioned in the error dialog that pops up. In this case it was the file at ‘C:\Users\Steve\AppData\Roaming\FileZilla\filezilla.xml’ and, after opening up the file I could see that it had become corrupt somehow and wasn’t valid XML.

The Solution

You have one of two options to resolve this problem. The first is to try and repair the file manually so the XML becomes valid again. The second (and easier) option is to simply delete the problematic XML file and it will be recreated when FileZilla next loads.

Note: If you decide to delete the file I’d recommend taking a backup of it first.

Thank you Mr. Steve Marks. Your post resolved my problem :)

  2. This has been the case for several versions now. I have some subdirectories in my web account that begin with a period/dot “.”. I can enter the directories manually in the address bar of FZ, but they otherwise will not show in the server file list.
